Fine Jason and the golden fleece shell cameo brooch

SKU: 698

In Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece is the fleece of the gold-haired winged ram.The ram had been sired by Poseidon in his primitive ram-form upon a nymph, Theophane, the granddaughter of Helios, the sun-Titan. According to Hyginus,he carried her away to an island where he made her into a ewe so that he could have his way with her among the flocks, where Theophane's other suitors could not distinguish the ram-god and his consort. At the prompting of his uncle Pelias, King of Iolcus in Thessaly, Jason, son of Aeson, led a large company of Greek heroes on a long voyage in the Argo to Colchis on the eastern shores of the Black Sea. His seemingly impossible task, which Pelias hoped would lead to Jason's death and the end of Jason's claims to his crown, was to remove the golden fleece of a ram from the keeping of dragon which never slept.

Jason assembled a great group of heroes, known as the Argonauts after their ship, the Argo. The group of heroes included the Boreads (sons of Boreas, the North Wind) who could fly, Heracles, Philoctetes, Peleus, Telamon, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux, Atalanta, and Euphemus.
